#28 How (not) to Celebrate Your National Holiday in Another Country

In the United States, tomorrow is Independence Day. We eat meat that’s been cooked over a fire and blow things up. When I put it that way, it sounds very neanderthal-y, but it is the epitome of the American summer. I generally don’t like summer a whole lot, but I love the 4th of July. It is easily one of my favorite holidays, and not because I am super patriotic, but rather because it brings back very fond memories of childhood. That, and I like fire and explosives. Pyro much?!?!

I was a little worried about my first July 4th outside the USA. It was in Australia, in the winter, so it automatically made it weird to not sweat my face off during the day. It also was within the first week of me joining staff in Perth, so I was very new and didn’t quite know where I fit in yet. At the same time, I was adamant that I would celebrate somehow. Lucky for me, several of the girls at my house decided to throw a USA party that day. We had the closest approximation to American BBQ we could muster, a geography quiz, and watched Independence Day. Being a relatively inclusive bunch, we invited everyone to join in the good ole’ over-the-top American festivities of excess and fun.
